Pediatrics is the branch of medicine that focuses on medical care of infants, children, and adolescents. Practitioners in this branch of medicine are known as pediatricians. A pediatrician treats a patient from birth to until the age of 18, when they are legally considered an adult.
Pediatrics is different than other branches of medicine for many reasons. Treating children is significantly different than caring for adults because children have unique medical conditions. Additionally, the size of their body requires special treatment which can be challenging at times. Since children are minors they cannot make decisions on their own, therefore requiring consent from the legal guardian. In every pediatric procedure the aspect of privacy, guardianship, and legal responsibility must be acknowledged. This requires pediatricians to develop and maintain a relationship with the parents or guardian, as well as the child.
Pediatricians generally provide vaccinations, health exams, and treatment for an array of injuries and conditions in minors. Many pediatricians feel that their work is rewarding, and develop a personal relationship with not only the patient, but in many cases the child's parents or guardian as well.
